Notes on Buffy 3.13: The Zeppo

Standard disclaimer: I'll often speak of foreshadowing, but that doesn't mean I'm at all committing to the idea that there was some fixed design from the word go -- it's a short hand for talking about the resonances that end up in the text as it unspools.

Standard spoiler warning: The notes are written for folks who have seen all of BtVS and AtS.  I'll be spoiling through the comics as well.  Basically -- if you are a spoiler-phobe and haven't seen or read it all, read further at your own risk.

Standard Credits:  I've written the material in black; Strudel (aka my Bro) writes in blue;
[info]local_max  writes in purple.  Or at least, that's what they've done when I finish editing and formatting.

Happy Easter and Delay on Notes

I had hoped to post the notes despite it being Easter, but the celebrations and Church obligations have slowed me down with things.  The notes should go up at midnight tomorrow.

Meanwhile, an excerpt from the exsultet.  Easter Vigil floods me with such joy every year!

Gender Inversion in Dead Things: a Tidbit

Interesting interview with Tim Minear

I've long argued that there was no way that they could have aired Dead Things if the genders were reversed in the alley way scene.  If Biff were pounding Spiketta's face into hamburger, there would have been outrage.  It was pointed out to me in a discussion about this that they let Angel get pretty rough with Darla in Reprise.  Vindication time!  Minear does say they meant for that scene to be dark -- but the studios wouldn't let them go too far, and in particular made them cut a scene of Angel backhanding Darla in the face.

So, yeah.  Girl hero pulverizes the face of the not totally evil boyfriend and that's OK.  Boy hero cannot be shown slapping girl villain in the face.

The other fun tidbit is that Minear thinks Angel is basically all about Darla and that Buffy is pretty much a rebound for him -- though Minear does say that's a retcon they developed on AtS.

Interesting interview all around.

Notes: Schedule Update

We're taking a week off to celebrate getting through the first major arc of season 3.  The notes to Gingerbread will go up a week from Sunday, April 17th.

Meanwhile in other news, I'm still having a hard time accessing my longer posts.  Will keep trying to get in for comments!

Wonkiness with the Notes

Hi All,

I went to reply to comments on Amends, but LJ won't let me access that post.  I can access my other ones.  Can anybody else access the notes to amends?  If not, I may have to repost it -- and many apologies about the lost comments, if it comes to that.

UPDATE:  Others are reporting LJ wonkiness as well.  I got in for a second but got kicked out again when I tried to post a reply to a comment.

So I'm going to leave it and hope it's fixed by tomorrow.  Thanks for the comments!  I look forward to reading them!!!
